Do not rent from Kyle McCowen and Patricia at 1424 16 street Northeast main floor Calgary Alberta

I moved into 1424 16 street NE in May 2011. The landlords name is Kyle McCowen. In August we were caught by surprise and realized bugs in our brand new bed and in our furniture. I have had that furniture for over 10 months in other apartments and have never experienced bites or seen bugs. We purchased are mattress while living there brand new and then it was quickly moved into by the bed bugs. I was so freaked I didn’t care for the legalities I also knew the landlord for this particular rental never did anything in a timely manner how I knew this was we had a plugged sink in the bathroom and a leaky kitchen faucet for over a month that occurred up-to 80.00 dollar charges in wasted water he finally fixed it and would not reimburse me the cost of the leak. So I took it upon myself to pay for an exterminator after two sprays and three months later the bed bugs have finally been exterminated along with the mattress, furniture, bedding and clothing I had to throw out. I lost over 1400.00 hundred dollars doing this. I later found out that it is the landlords responsibility despite of where the bugs came from here in Alberta they must pay for the procedure. I told Kyle this and he agreed with me and said out of the rent I can have one month free rent for my troubles and money lost it doesn’t cover all the expenses but at least it was some kind of reimbursement. Later that week he showed up at my door unannounced and said he wanted 300.00 out of the unpaid rent and has changed his mind about the full rent reimbursement for the bed bugs. I didnt give it to him he then started showing up with gifts again unannounced twice in a row so finally after enough harassment and black mail I gave him a 300.00 check post dated plus the following months rent. Now the major problem he has been avoiding since the cold weather hit is we don’t have heat he has made 101 reasons as to why it is so cold. He will not get the furnance ducts checked. He used silicon to cock the windows except instead of doing it outside he sealed the windows on the inside I reported this lazy job to the fire department and because we could not open the windows while being sealed in they said to remove the silicon immediately and call the health board about the lack of heat faulty furnance and due to all of this the uninhabitable heating conditions. Do not rent from this land lord.

Norman Fuller is a bad landlord

I rented apartment 4 at 410 E. 13th Ave, Columbus, Ohio from Norman Fuller from Nov. 2010 to Nov. 2011.
He was a HORRIBLE landlord. I hope my accounting of what went on can help someone else:

1. I did not meet Norman Fuller prior to moving in to the apartment. This is a
bad sign. Any reputable landlord should meet with you in person about the
apartment. At the very least, he should come down when you move in to inspect
the apartment with you, so that you are not held accountable for any damages
that previous tenants did. Norman Fuller did neither of these things.

2. I moved in to the apartment on November 12th, 2010. When I moved in, there
was NO HEATING. The furnace was broken and would not produce any heat. It took
2 WEEKS for Norman Fuller to arrange to have the furnace fixed. This was the
middle of NOVEMBER in OHIO. I had to use a small space heater during that
time.

3. Things went fairly well until my car was BROKEN INTO while parked next to
the building, and some personal possessions were stolen. Norman Fuller had
told me on moving in that there was a security camera in the parking lot
behind the building, as well as a security light. After a few months, the
security light blew out (but was never replaced) and when I told him about the
robbery, he told me that “unfortunately” the camera was broken so they had no
recorded evidence for the police. During my year living in Mr. Fuller’s
apartment, THE CAMERA WAS NEVER FIXED.

4. I got a roommate in January, and shortly after she moved in, the doorknob
to the front door broke off on the inside. Did Norman Fuller come down to fix
it? NO. We had still never met him in person. He asked his DAUGHTER’S
BOYFRIEND to come fix it for us. Not a property manager. His DAUGHTER’S
BOYFRIEND. Needless to say it took almost a WEEK to get the doorknob replaced,
during which time the only lock we could lock was the deadbolt. Talk about
safety.

5. Ants invaded the apartment in the spring. Norman Fuller did not even reply
to my email about this. We spent our own money to get rid of them.

6. The upstairs neighbors’ water heater broke. It flooded our livingroom and
soaked the carpet. Did we see Mr. Fuller? No. Instead, his daughters brought
us a shop-vac and told us to clean it up “as best we could.”

7. During this incident, not only did the carpeting begin to mildew and smell
up the whole apartment, but some of the wallpaper peeled back to reveal specks
of BLACK MOLD that had been living behind the wallpaper. When we contacted
Norman Fuller, he did nothing. AFTER 2 WEEKS, I had to go to a student legal
aid and threaten to put the rent in escrow before Norman Fuller even deigned
to fix the problem. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME WE HAD MET OUR LANDLORD IN PERSON.
Instead of having a professional get rid of the mold, or even just bleaching
it, he and his wife PAINTED OVER IT.

8. My roommate’s car was broken into TWICE during this time, and my car was
broken into once again as well. Fuller did nothing.

9. During some neighborhood construction, the gas company turned off the gas
to the apartment and the furnace. They wouldn’t turn the furnace back on
because they RED TAGGED IT. This means that the furnace was in an unsafe
condition to be turned on. I was told by a gas company representative that
turning on the furnace would put it in danger of exploding. When I told Norman
Fuller this, he told me that because it was summer and we “weren’t going to be
using [the furnace] for a while” that he wouldn’t get it fixed. Nevertheless,
we had been living for months with a furnace that was dangerous.

10. In October 2011, when it was already getting cold (down in the 50s and 40s
at night), I finally was able to convince him to fix the furnace. This
happened relatively quickly (within a week), but the men who fixed it said
that apparently the filter on the previous furnace had not been changed since
it had been installed, due to the amount of dust and dirt that had
accumulated. NEVER CHANGED. That means that at least 2 YEARS worth of dirt had
been accumulated on that furnace filter, and we were continuously breathing it
in. Most furnace companies recommend once a MONTH, or at least every few
months. This is not only unsanitary, it’s a fire hazard.

11. Now that I’ve moved out, Norman Fuller is making up allegations about “cat
urine” in the apartment in an effort to cheat me out of my deposit return. I
had people over at my apartment helping me move out, including my family
members, and they all say they smelled NOTHING. I spent two days cleaning the
apartment before I moved out. So, not only did Norman Fuller treat me badly as
a landlord during the past year, NOW he is trying to cheat me out of my
deposit.

12. When my roommate and I rented there, the rent was $425 a month, but now
he’s raising it to $450 for new tenants. THE apartment is not worth $200 a
month with all the crap you have to put up with.

Overall Rating: Negative HALF A STAR.

I have never lived in such slummy conditions as I did when I rented from
Norman Fuller. This is the kind of irresponsible landlord-ship that comes from
thinking “oh hey if I buy an apartment in a college town I can make some extra
money” without taking the time and energy that is required to maintain a
property. This is not the kind of person from whom you want to rent. PLEASE
use caution when dealing with him.

T. Georgievski in Sydney Austlaria; worst landlord

He built a house in his new property in Western suburb, Sydney and greedy enough, rent it out. We rented this house to us for a year without letting us know he lived next door. He is around 30 years old who became the landlord for the first time. He used to monitor our front/backyard and complain us through his real estate which manages the property for him, that we do not mow the lawn as frequent as we should. When we left the property after a year of contract, he charged us from the deposit replacing the whole backyard lawn without our consent. He also replaced the whole new carpet just because there was a small stain on it.
Again, without notifying us first. He even told us that we were lucky he didn’t claim a little mark on the wall which he had the whole wall repainted.

We reported his arrogant attitudes and behaviour to the consumer affair tribunal. At the hearing, he brought the real estate property manager with him because he couldn’t deal with it alone.  ( in our application, I only requested himself). Together with this agent, they tried to talk me into agree with their demand of paying 1000 dollars for replacement of the lawn and the carpet. I am not a English speaker by the way. They took advantage of it and pushed me to the edge. They brought pictures and invoices which have been allegedly fabricated in my opinion. The Judge was very quick to find that they didn’t bring receipts of actual payment to the installers of the lawn and carpet(they only brought invoices).
They brought reports by his favorite installers but they were objected by the Judge as not credible. He even tried to plea to the Judge emotionally that he was very much attached to the property because this was his first time investment so that he wanted keep everything as new. He wanted replace anything that was damaged without giving the tenant a chance to repair first. Judge( like Judge Judy) did not buy any of his argument.

He is good at exploiting people using his professional knowledge( he used to work for this real estate company, now works for associated developping company).  The Judge was very reasonable with integrity. He had to compromise his claim at the end to a large expent which we also had to compromise even though we were not responsible for those damages as far as we are concerned. He spent extravagantly to fix the alleged damages, without our knowledge, out of the deposit which is not fair at all. At least “Justice” has done which we were happy with. The funny thing was that he even brought the carpet which was damaged into the court as evidence. Judge was not interested in it at all and didn’t even look at it.  Watch out Mr Georgivski, Kharma is going to get you someday.
