Cheap bastards posing as “Good Christians” Jim & Karen Corcoran are not good Landlords!

I have rented from a lot of different people and management companies but, I have NEVER had such a poor experienced as I have had with Jim and Karen Corcoran.

It is a cute brick three bedroom house in Renton.  We have been here 1 year and we are gladly leaving this June.  When we started our relationship with Jim and Karen we told them we wanted something long term because we were preparing to buy hopefully sooner rather than later.  We are a small family of three and when we moved in our son was only three months old.  We wanted something safe and clean so we could raise our son.  We took photos and asked all the right questions. 

They told us they were a good Christian couple who went to the church across the street from the rental. (Lie) They wanted a nice family in the home.  The said they bought the house and fixed it up to give to their daughter but, she changed her mind and now they could not sell it because of the market. (Lie) They have other rentals and at the time they lived in a big beautiful house in Newcastle which was minutes away.  It sounded perfect.  I asked for former renter’s info so I could call and ask how Jim was as a landlord.  Jim told me the previous tenant who had been a long term tenant moved overseas for a new job.  He said the guy was weird and stuck him with a bunch of bills and he had no way of contacting him. (Lie, Lie, Lie) I had a funny feeling which I should have followed but, I did not.  I should have done a little research but, I did not. 

After we moved in things start to break….of course.  And truth be told after I did some research in public records I found that the home was bought to be a rental.  Jim had to put in permits for some of the work he did.  Jim did all the “upgrades” himself and did a crappy job.  He is not a professional anything. 

The bathroom tile is not grouted or sealed correctly and the countertop just sits on the base.  The floor tile is not laid evenly so it has several cracks in it now because of use.  It also is not sealed and the grout is coming up.  The master bathroom is worse…. The floor heating vent is INSIDE the cabinet.  That’s right… there had been a pedestal sink there and he replaced it with a cabinet with drawers but, it does not fit and he put it right over the vent.  The vent gets hot too!  The shower handle broke off in my husbands hand and when we called Jim he blamed us for breaking it!

He put in three sky lights…all have leaked several times and each time I call he comes out and throws some glue on them and says they are “fixed.” They are not fixed because the whole roof needs to be replaced.  There are dips and pockets in the roof and the water just sits and pools. 

We had a problem with the garbage disposal which then lead to the old dishwasher overflowing when it was not even running.  I had smelly water pouring out on the kitchen floor and when I called him he told me to call a plumber and fix it and pay for it myself because I broke it.  He said per the lease it was not his problem if we broke it.

Oh… might I add that anytime he came out he acted like he was doing us a favor and he CHARGHED us $50 each time.  I should also say that Jim and Karen moved to Whidbey Island which is 46 miles away and an hour and a half drive with a ferry ride thrown in.  So…of course ANYTHING that he should be taking care of he does not want to because he lives so far away!!

I think we are pretty low key tenants.  We bought a lawn mower to keep the yard up.  We take pride in where we live and want it to look nice.  We only called him when it was a real problem and he always got his rent on time…always. 

We are moving into a cute three bedroom townhome with more square footage than the house and a nice woman landlord who did not require a long lease and seems reasonable. 

I have yet to see if we get any of the deposit back but, I doubt it since Jim is such a cheap bastard. 

Beware of Jim and Karen Corcoran!  THEY ARE NOT GOOD LANDLORDS.
