I am a University student renting a main floor suite at 213 Murray Crescent, Kelowna BC, Canada. My two room mates and I moved in to the suite in Sept. and have received nothing but trouble ever since. Our landlord, Nichole Arnt, lives in South Africa. Her friend Chantelle Zilkowsky has been acting as property manager in her absence. Chantelle has a yappy little yorkie that barks incessantly when left at home alone (he will bark for hours at a time). Even when Chantelle is home and her dog begins barking it takes her a significant amount of time before telling him to stop. We were also awaken on various occasions by her screaming fights with her daughter. On other occasions she would decide to wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning to clump around the kitchen (starting dishwashers and laundry machines) thus walking us up. Chantelle informed our land lord that we were always giving her the rent late, although this was not true. After viewing bank records, multiple cashed cheque’s showed that she was depositing our money late (some times 5 days late) and then blaming the lateness on us. Chantelle will leave multiple lights on within the house when not in the room/house. When she leaves on trips these lights are left on. She left on a trip to see Nichole ( our landlord) in early Nov. and was supposed to return around the 14th of Dec. When returning from our thanksgiving holidays on Nov. 12, I came home to find that her portion of the house had various lights left on despite her lengthy vacation. She had left five lights on and the tv and had intended to be gone for a month. She returned two weeks early due to a fight with Nichole. We were given no notification that she would be returning so early so both my room mate and I had our cars parked in the driveway. At 1:30 am Chantelle proceeded to pound on our door, when she received no answer she went to the garage door and began yelling. After opening the door my room mate was then forced to move her car out of the drive way although Chantelles vehicle was already in the garage. Upon her return we were asked by Nichole to get Chantelle to sign the tenancy agreement she was supposed to come pick up four months earlier. After her daughter finally opened the door we were screamed at because she had to pay a $25 fee to deposit our cheques into Nichole’s account ( despite being given a significant reduction in rent specifically for this reason, according to Nichole). We were also accused of breaking federal law because we held onto her mail while she was gone on her trip because the mailbox was overflowing and she did not provide us with any instructions/contact info while she was away in Africa. Chantelle proceeded to refuse our $1200 of rent and slammed the door in our faces. For the months of Nov and Dec we froze in our house. Informing Nichole did no good because Chantelle would not respond to her emails. You could not stay in the house without wearing full winter gear to stay warm. During our final exams our internet/cable was shut off. Upon returning from Christmas holidays we found that she had entered our house without any notification. She rummaged through/emptied out our belongings and took two dressers, my bed, our dinning table and microwave. She locked a door that separated my room from the remainder of our house (which only the upper suite has the ability to open). She has just finally given us the utility bills ( two months late, and would not allow us to see the earlier bills to ensure we were paying the appropriate amounts). Living in this house has been hell! It has been highly detrimental to three students trying to complete school. We have received no compensation of any kind for our troubles from Nichole. I would not recommend ever renting from Chantelle Zilkowsky, she is insensitive to other tenants, neglectful of her responsibilities as property manager and passive aggressive.
